Why is it so hard to find a Graphic/Web design job? I thought that these were high demand jobs. I went to school for this and have an online digital portfolio. I can't even count how many job listings I responded to and hear nothing, I can't even get an interview. It seems like every place wants all this experience but how do you get your foot in the door? ????: Money Maker Discussion Forum|Make Money Online|Seo|Blackhat Seo|WhiteHat|GreyHat|Affiliate and Internet Marketing http://www.moneymakerdiscussion.com/forum/graphic-design/6764-why-so-hard-find-graphic-web-design-job-post44443.html Help someone please!!! |

heh - I think you fell for college propoganda. Every year, tens of thousands of kids try to become graphic designers or web designers and pay tens of thousands of dollars in college studying to become one. Guess what? There's no few jobs in that industry that it's unlikely that you will ever find such a position. You were lied to. But don't lose hope. You're not useless, after all. You are an educated person and there are ways you may be able to contribute to this sort of thing. Looking at digital media, most publishers design their sites based on logic as dictated by Search Engine Optimization (Search Engine Optimization). Everything from directory structure to img src is based on Search Engine Optimization principles. No, no one is going to pay you to mess around in Photoshop all day. But, you will be able to contribute to the layout of a site. |

The market is saturated with web and graphic designers making it a tough and competitive industry. Find a niche to carve out for yourself and do as much freelance work as you can, continuously building upon your portfolio and experience while always networking and establishing relationships with everyone you encounter. You'd be surprised at how many jobs are given to someone because of a personal relationship/referral. Never burn bridges, always do your work on time and exceed expectations and you will find more jobs coming your way than you can handle.

Now days Graphic Design has become a very common career. Some people have never gone to school for Graphic Design, but manage to learn all the programs needed. This makes getting a job for a real Graphic Designer more difficult. Now days, one does not really need a degree to be a Graphic Designer. As long as you have an incredible portfolio and know all the programs, you are in. Also, the people who never went to school for Graphic Design charge much less than someone who has gone through proper schooling. ????: Money Maker Discussion Forum|Make Money Online|Seo|Blackhat Seo|WhiteHat|GreyHat|Affiliate and Internet Marketing http://www.moneymakerdiscussion.com/forum/graphic-design/6764-why-so-hard-find-graphic-web-design-job-post44447.html Graphic Design has become over populated with people. This is why I no longer do it and would rather freelance while having a stable job. |

Like the term "market is saturated". Many people say there is too many graphic/web designer, but the truth is there are few good ones and this goes for all job sectors that are being cut, the hardest thing is finding a entry level job (long topic to explain many factors). I had someone that needed a job in order to fulfill his school requirements, it took a long time for even a networked school to find one. Trust me I am in the same situation as you and a lot who don't want to admit it yet. Some people are good, others are great, and the many bad who usually are the ones that ruin the market and over saturate it and it shows with just about all marketplaces today. A lot of people don't hire web designer/graphic designers based on past experiences and simply don't trust many in the industry. Keep at it and post your digital portfolio here I would like to take a look at it!. Success doesn't happen overnight.

| Because I can pay someone from India $2 for the same thing you want $200 to produce.

It would be a good idea to study copywriting. Look for "Scientific Advertising" by Claude Hopkins. It is public domain now. Claude Hopkins is granddaddy of advertising. Many highly successful marketing would read "Scientific Advertising" annually. ????: Money Maker Discussion Forum|Make Money Online|Seo|Blackhat Seo|WhiteHat|GreyHat|Affiliate and Internet Marketing http://www.moneymakerdiscussion.com/forum/graphic-design/6764-why-so-hard-find-graphic-web-design-job-post96406.html John Caples, other successful advertiser, explained in his book, "Tested Advertising", on how advertiser and illustrator don't work together well. Because both have different idea of how it should be advertised. In other word, there are many copywriters that I am sure have hard time find a good graphic designer who understand how can graphic and advertising go hand in hand. Positioning yourself and stand out in pack of graphic designers. With solid knowledge of copywriting, you will be able to sell yourself easily to other marketers. Both of you will be on the same wavelength. |

Its the same with the programming industry tbh. ????: Money Maker Discussion Forum|Make Money Online|Seo|Blackhat Seo|WhiteHat|GreyHat|Affiliate and Internet Marketing http://www.moneymakerdiscussion.com/forum/graphic-design/6764-why-so-hard-find-graphic-web-design-job-post96416.html The problem with the programming industry, and i would suggest the graphics industry aswell. Is that it isnt a "trade". Not everyone can be a good programmer or designer. You can sit through university, or a private training place, and get whatever qualifications. But that doesnt mean you are good at all. Employers dont want risks, its pretty hard to fire people nowadays (Or atleast over here in New Zealand). I cant say too much about getting a job in the programming industry, because since i got my Developer qualidications ive just worked for myself. But in a past life i was a qualified network engineer (Cisco, Microsoft etc). And the ones where i got interview was ones i completely rewrote my cover letter for the job. And wrote it in almost a casual way. From memory (Going back a few years now), i wrote things like "I would be happy to sit a aptitude test" , "I am also happy to be put on a 3 month trial contract". Things like this mean less risk for the employer. For yourself, i would write something in your cover letter about passing over portfolio's of work, starting on a contract basis, when you come in for your interview you can do some work right then and there etc. You have to look at it from an employers point of view. They dont want to hire you, if your crap. And anyone can get qualifications, even crap designers. You need to lessen the risk for the employer, even if it puts your future with that company at risk. If your good at your job, you get put on a full time basis. |

Other then that most people simply do it themselves and/or simply setup a wordpress or other CMS and slap a nice theme on it. Blame the fall of your craft on easy to use one button CMSs. Thing are so simple these days your granny or baby brother could set one up. And changing it up is simple as uploading a new theme. Usually anything more then that confuses and scares people. And boards like this, pfft probably not going to find much work, we are worst then pirates at pirate bay. Check out the Downloads section lots of high quality premium themes up for grabs for free. We are all mostly about automation and churning out quantity over quality. And automation is key for us. You'd be better off going to a webmasters board and asking for work there, or getafreelancer but most likely going to be out bid by a indian as stated up previously who would do a $200 theme or web design for pennies on the dollar. I suggest double majoring and getting something useful like a business degree or law degree, and using your gfx degree for backup or as a hobby if needed. It's hard to believe but that is the nature of the world these days, but the colleges are in the business of selling high dollar educations instead of guiding you to something useful. Try offer yourself as a one week intern at any places with in house Art Department just to show what you can do. today its easy to copy a Photoshop design and claim it yours. What they are looking for is SKILLS. you can show them the skills/experience with them watching you. Money is not there but its a start with your foot in the door (as well addition to your resume) Last edited by billthecat; 02-17-2010 at 07:30 PM. |

There are many sites where you can present yourself as a graphic Designer and showcase the best of your designs / Graphic Designing will be needed as long as people have products to sell. Look for such websites that will showcase your expertise and who knows you might hear from some great talent hunter one day ????: Money Maker Discussion Forum|Make Money Online|Seo|Blackhat Seo|WhiteHat|GreyHat|Affiliate and Internet Marketing http://www.moneymakerdiscussion.com/forum/graphic-design/6764-why-so-hard-find-graphic-web-design-job-post110232.html Wishing you all the best in your endeavors |

Probably has to do with the economy as well. If companies have a site up thats working for them, they aren't putting the money into marketing for redesign. The company I work for is actually recruiting for a UI guy, but it's more than just graphic design. The "UI" type of person we are looking for needs to be able to not just make graphics but be proficient in HTML, CSS and Javascript as well. For us finding a real UI developer is actually pretty tough. |
