Hey guys. I'm doing a bit of a case study at the moment that I thought I would share here.

I’ll be sharing a real life case study where you can follow along as I build up a brand new niche site from from scratch, get searh engine traffic to it and hopefully make it profitable.

And I’ll be each and every step of the process right here in this thread.

A lot of people aren't willing to reveal their niches and sites as it can result in more competition… but screw it. I'll be sharing everything in this case study – the niche, domain, revenue and EVERYTHING!

Anyway enough talking and lets just jump straight in!

Finding a Profitable Niche...
To find a niche I spent a bit of time browsing through the thousands of items over at Amazon, this is great way to find random products that get a lot of searches with little competition.

After a bit of searching I stumble upon the ‘Wine Aerator’. You pour your wine through them to aerate and bring out the full flavor of a wine.

After doing a quick search in the Google Keyword tool I find that there’s a good number of people searching for 'Wine Aerator':

And after doing a search in Google for ‘Wine Aerator’ I see that there’s very little competition for this term too:

Looks pretty good with less than a million results - I think I’ve found my niche!

Setting up a Niche Website...
First I registered a domain name with my main keyword ‘Wine Aerator’ in it through NameCheap.

The domain I ended up settling on was WineAeratorWorld.com.

I then set up a WordPress blog over on my hosting account:

If you haven’t already got yourself web hosting then I recommend checking out HostGator, it cost less than $10 a month and they have a feature called 'Fantastico' that allows you to install WordPress with just a few clicks.

Choosing a Theme for the Site...
Next it’s time to spruce up the site with a good looking WordPress theme.

For this website I’ve decided to use the ShopperPress theme. It’s a paid theme that turns your blog into a great looking online store that’s compatible with affiliate products.

ShopperPress comes with 21 different template variations:

If you're following along and don't want to splash out for ShopperPress then a free WordPress theme will also work just find :)

Adding Products to the Site...
Next it's time to add afew products to the site. Using the Google Keyword Tool I find some decent longtail keywords for products to target:

I then wrote around 300-400 words of unique content about each Aerator and added it to my blog along with their Amazon pictures:

SEOing the Site...
I then installed the Yoast SEO Plugin to optimize the site for the search engines:

This plugin is free, easy to use and very effective!

Link Building...
Finally I've just build a few links to the site to get it indexed. Two blog comments, two forum signature links and two social bookmarks... easy as!

Final Words...
Now that I’ve found a niche, chucked up a website, created some content and built a few links I’ll just leave the website to sit for a bit whilst the Search Engines discover and index it.

To see the site in action head over to WineAeratorWorld.com.

The second part of this case study will be on its way soon so keep an eye on this thread!

When you searched for the term "wine aerator" was that a exact search or broad? Also when I just tried to search "wine aerator" every compition was high.... im just trying to figure out where you saw low compition :s:

It was exact match. The "high" competition that you are seeing refers to the Adwords competition (PPC) not the organic search competition (SEO).

Part Two...

So all I've done so far is build a few pages and backlinks to my site and already I can see I'm starting to rank for a couple of the keywords that I'm targetting:

I'm also starting to receive a few hits from Google for these terms:

It's not a whole lot of traffic but I really haven't done much to the site yet and am only just getting started. To succeed with SEO you've gotta have patience!

Adding More Content...

The next thing I have done is head back to the Google Keyword Tool to find some more keywords to target:

I've picked three from the list and have made a new product page for each of them and added it to the site. My site now looks like this:

In total I've now got six pages on the site.

Building More Links...

Next I build a few more backlinks consisting of a couple more forum links, a couple more blog comments.

I've also set up a niche related Squidoo, Weebly and Webs.com page with links point back to my website:

And that's it for now. I'll just give Google a little time to find my new pages and backlinks.

Why You Should NEVER Out Your Niches...
You might remember that in my first post in this case study I mentioned that people rarely reveal their niches to people... and it's for a good reason. People will copy you.

Whilst building some more links to my website I stumbled across someone who was building links for a website called WineAeratorShop.com.

I thought "Oh hey, I'll see what their site is like!"... upon checking I just had to laugh when I saw this:

It's pretty much an exact rip off of my site. They've used the same images, theme, niche and products. They have slightly changed around some of the text but not enough to really make it "unique content".

Now I really don't care if people copy me. In fact, the main reason I'm doing this case study is to help others out and teach them a few things rather than make money.

But here's the thing: It's not in your interest to just copy me! (In fact, it's a terrible idea).

You'll be far better off taking the time to find your own little niche and creating your own UNIQUE content rather then copying a publicly revealed niche/website... why would you want all that extra competition? There are literally endless amounts of untapped, obscure products that are just waiting to promoted that aren't available for every man and his dog to see on a public forum like this one!

Anyway, feel free to ask any questions you like and keep an eye out for part three of this case study!

Hi

I see that your competition has put up his domain for sale. Did some analyzes on your site with seospy and can`t find any backlinks yet, which means that the backlinks is not on your money site but stands apart from your money site, is this normal practice or do I understand it incorrectly and will you later add these links to your money site? And if you do it in this manner what is your reasoning for doing it this way?

Backlink checkers are never 100% accurate and often take a while to register your links. I can assure you I have been building backlinks to my website!Part Three...Time for another update for anyone that's following along!New Pages...Since my last update I've added three new pages for three more 'aerator' keywords:
You can check them out here: Centellino Wine Aerator, Nuance Wine Aerator & Sharper Image Wine Aerator.New Backlinks...I've also been building some new backlinks and have been using a site called Knowem.com to find good sites to build my backlinks on.Here's an example of one of them:
You might notice that I've also added a link to a site that isn't my own. I like to add links to other relevant sites that aren't competing for the same keyword as me to make my backlinks look more natural and relevant.Traffic is Picking Up...My traffic is starting to increase. Here's my traffic logs from last month:
The First Sales!I've sold my first few aerators too... it's not much but it's a nice start:
More updates coming soon...Be sure to keep an eye on this thread - I'll keep updating it as things progress!
