Hi everyone !
I'm really sorry to bother you with another noob question but I'm stuck.
I want to sell websites to local businesses or individuals (I know how to program and I have a lot of pre-made websites and wordpress themes), but I can't find any lead.
I even created a website that present "my company" and its services. How do you find clients to sell websites to ?
I hope someone is going to be generous enough to share his experience with me.
If not, thank you anyway.

Excuse me for my english but it is not my main language.

Hy i follow a bit strange method. I do not sell the website to them but i rent it:) I make a website for exmaple www.dentistmycity.com you can choose any typo of business or professionals and do a similar website. I than do some SEO on the website and rank it on the first position for the main keyword that is dentist mycity. Than i head to yellow pages and get all the informations i need about dentists in my city and i cintact them by phone or email or whatever method i can find. I propose them my website that is already ranking first place on google. As many of you know persons think that if a website is on the first position of google means that that website really deserves to be there. They do not know that the website is there because of SEO efforts. I explain this concept to the dentists. And they almost allways agree to pay me my monthly fee. I usually charge them between 75-100 euro a month and i do 6-12 months contracts.

If not another method that i used is offer them a free website with the condition that they register through your affiliation link that you have with your hosting company. You offer them a discount code (i can make thoose with hostgator). I make them register a hosting account for 1 year. Than i provide them with a free website that is a very basic website. Haves cotact page, about page, services pages. Maximum 5 pages per website. For any aditional page you charge them 50$ or more for logo you charge them 100$ or more. Use your head and you can make lots of money.

Another way is goto yelp or yellowpages and look at websites in your city and see who has a really bad designed site and make a sample site for them and tell them you can complete the site for $xxx and im sure that can help bring in some leads.
This could also funnel in some SEO sales as well even if you outsource it.

Well if you follow our tips you will find fo sure someone to sell a website to. There is no easy way. Or if you have some cash to invest buy some threads on forums and advertise there. Do you already have a website where you sell your Services ?

Yeah I couldn't agree more with "entri3a" goto the obvious places first to source leads, aside from that... look at the local businesses in your immediate area.

Well what is it exactly that your asking? No offense but obviously your definition of "looking for ways to find website clients" differs from ours.
This is not what I'm asking guys, but thanks for these wonderful advices.

My Head.
These are good standard techniques that have been mentioned...

I find it best to do a "Passive" type marketing thing.

You said that you are good at coding etc, right?

Here's what I like to do and this can be done not just in your local city, but in your niche as well.

NOTE:
This is not your overnight model, but you can implement this pretty fast!

Create a local city/county website -> Mycityplace.com

Create your standard categories that are of interest to the local community. "build for the community/people"

NOTE: This is a bigger type I would typically do, but you can target smaller site models like a classifieds site, real estate search site, etc. The smaller the focus, the more I blow the site out visually etc.

MyCitySite.com

- Business directory
-- listings
-- online business advice for small biz owners

Real Estate
-- For sale
-- For rent

- Pets
-- adoptions
-- lost/found

- Employment
-- job seekers
-- employeers

- Restaurants
-- Coupons
-- reviews

You get the point.

Something decent, just don't over think it!

Now you can start calling/emailing EVERYONE and asking them if they would like a FREE listing etc.

Free listing of Company / Jobs / Discounts,Coupons / Etc.

Think of ways to get them interested!

- Ask them if they would be up for a phone interview to discuss their business, Phone interviews are easy and sell easily, give some of these away - Most people like to talk about themselves and accomplishments.

- Offer a FREE service/consultation

The thing about this model I like is that I can have people CALLING ME fairly quick.

I have established a relationship with them without Direct selling them.

I have established myself as an authority in their eyes.

If you take some time, do this right, you should have a source of income that you can tap when you need it.

There's more you can do with this model but that should give you an ideal.

Just look ad advertisements in local newspapers and handouts. Do they have a website mentioned in the flyer? If not, they probably do not have a website. They miss out on what 2012 has to offer them in terms of getting more customers. You call them, set up an appointment and close the deal!

Make sure you make a price for the website and recurring income with maintenance or adding pages

Deciding to focus on creating websites on a certain sector such as business consultation services or even for local lawyers, then create a sample site that you rank with at least one keyword and finally, just look for a phone directory or yellow pages and look for those that don't have websites then CALL THEM! Calling leads is the best method before even sending them emails....

For this type of task, I think it would be a good idea to hire someone to do your marketing and even sales. Trust me, it's all worth it along.

I think that all of these people are trying to help you. There are a number of different things that you can do in order to sell your services to people who need some new websites, but you do need to go out there and do the work. You are not going to sell your services to someone just by pushing a magic button and hoping that it all works out. You have to put in the effort and you will see results.
With the first idea of looking at old websites, you can actually get a lot of business if you can offer some reasonable rates. Most of the poorly designed websites are done by business owners themselves and they are trying to save money. You can go in, show them how you can fix the website, how this new website is going to add a lot of value to their business, and so on, and quote them a reasonable price, and they will probably go with you. Many business owners hold off on paying someone because they think it will cost them too much, but unless you are charging really high rates, you are going to be worth the price.
Then you can go through and see if there are any companies in your area that do not have websites. A simple web search of businesses in your city should give you a pretty comprehensive list. See which ones do not have websites in the first place. Since the website is integral to most businesses and can help clients to find the business, you can be of great value to these people. Perhaps they just have not had time or do not understand how to get started and you can be the one who comes in and helps them.
Now you have to just get going and work to meet the demands. You can go into your local businesses and offer to help them build a new website. Try to go into the business during their downtimes. No business owner is going to have time for you when they are busy and you probably will not get to build their website if you are bothering them.
Also, make sure to do some advertising. How is someone supposed to hire you as a web designer if they have no idea who you are? You can put out some ads in a local paper, place up a bulletin in your grocery store, or hand out business cards as you go and talk to different owners. These all help to get your name out there to prospective clients and you could see a lot of business start to roll in.

I guess you should list your company in sites like yellowpages or yelp. A lot of business owners come there to look for opportunities.

Actually I'm now recommending against placing a website in a newspaper ad. It distracts from the main goal which is a phone call to set an appointment to make a sale. An email address is a good alternative if you want another form of contact.
